Stage Academy will be performing this Friday, October 14 at the George Daily Auditorium! For the past six weeks, 43 students have been working hard on two separate productions. On Friday night, our open-enrollment general session, which is comprised of 30 children, will be performing Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?. Following their show Act II, Stage Academy's auditioned program, will perform Sherlock Holmes.

Performances begin at 7:00 p.m., and the entire evening is free. Make sure you join us - you'll be amazed at what these talented students have accomplished!

We've had a wonderful week of auditions and want to congratulate all of the fantastic students that tried out for Act II. We are constantly impressed (and sometimes amazed) by your extremely talented children. Thank you for supporting them in this endeavor, and for helping them continue to develop their love of theatre!

We hope to see everyone next week! Our general session begins Tuesday, and
Act II starts rehearsals on Wednesday. We're looking forward to a wonderful fall season!

School is starting up again and as students are returning to their routines, we are getting ready for our fall session of Stage Academy! Rehearsals for both the general session and Act II will begin after Labor Day, but auditions for Act II are next week!

During the fall session, Act II will be putting on "Sherlock Holmes." We're very excited about this mysterious drama, and can't wait to tackle this material with your talented children!

We encourage any interested students in grades 1 - 8 to try out for this production. An audition sign-up sheet is currently available at the office of the George Daily Auditorium.

Week 9 - Scooby Doo & the Haunted Auditorium

Summer theatre camp went out with a bang this week - we had a record-breaking attendance of 36 kids for our last session! We decided to start a new DYT tradition of ending each of our summers with the student and audience favorite "Scooby Doo & the Haunted Auditorium"! We tweaked last year's story quite a bit - new characters, new villains and new hijinks - but the basic story remained the same. The kids had a blast putting together this entertaining and exciting show, and our 175-person audience loved it!

Week Eight - Peter Pan

We had a very large and very young group this week with 34 campers (21 of whom were under the age of 10!). We had a wonderful time introducing all of our new kids to the stage, and were so impressed by what this group was able to do in just one week.

Week Seven - Back to the Future

We had an absolute BLAST this week putting together our show. We traveled back in time to both the 80's and the 50's as we brought Back to the Future to the stage. The kids had an awful lot of fun with this entertaining script, and all of the period costumes and sets!

Week Six - The Chronicles of Narnia

We had an immensely talented group of 25 young actors this week, so we decided to tackle a different type of show. The Chronicles of Narnia, a more dramatic story, was a nice change of pace from the light-hearted shows we typically do during the summer. The kids were excited to try something new as well, and the results were fantastic!

Week 5 - The Wizard of Oz

With the holiday on Monday, we had a short session of camp this week! Our first day was Tuesday, but the campers all pre-registered so that a script could be written ahead of time. We had a very busy week, but were still able to put on a standard-length DYT show.

We had great fun with The Wizard of Oz this week, and were so impressed by what these 22 campers could accomplish in such a short time. Enjoy the pictures below!

Remember that there is no camp the week of July 11. We will resume Monday, July 18, and have four sessions left during the summer. We hope to see you all soon!

Week Four - Horton Hears a Who

This week we had a very new, young group - our total attendance was 27, with only 8 campers over the age of 10. It was a great leadership opportunity for our older campers as they got to help introduce the young ones to theatre, and we had a blast putting together our show. Dr. Seuss is always one of our favorite themes to do on stage, and Horton was no exception. We had a terrific show, and were so impressed by what the kids were able to do.

Week Three - Spirits, Secrets & Swedes

For our third session, we put together a Daily Youth Theatre original! Taking elements of some of our favorite shows (Clue, Scooby Doo and The Foreigner, to name a few) we created our own play for our 23 campers this week - the results were hilarious!

In the show, we follow a best-selling mystery novelist who is staying in a run down mansion-turned-bed-and-breakfast in the mountains, trying to write his next book. When a freak storm comes through, all sorts of people are forced into the mansion for the night. But the mysterious happenings that have been plaguing the house for months get worse and worse, until eventually one of the owners goes missing! The farce got lots of laughs, and we had a wonderful time putting together this production!

Week Two - The Little Mermaid

This session we had 26 campers in attendance, and had a very busy week as we put together our show! We based our story on the classic Disney movie The Little Mermaid, and had so much fun with costumes and sets! This show was more complex than a lot that we've done at summer camp, but the kids worked hard and I think the results were wonderful!

Week One - Diary of a Wimpy Kid

We had a record-breaking 34 kids at our first week of theatre camp! We had a fantastic time working with and getting to know all of these wonderful kids. We've really missed camp and are so glad to be back in the swing of things!

We adapted the popular children's books 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' for our show this week, and had fantastic results! We followed three Wimpy Kids as they started middle school - one who had just moved in to a new town, another who desperately wanted to fit in, and one who just didn't quite understand the meaning of the word 'cool.'

Summer camp is here!

I am so excited to finally announce the details of our much anticipated 2011 summer theatre camp! We've been hard at work planning the season and can't wait to get started!

We hope everyone has had a wonderful spring and that your children are enjoying their last weeks of school; we have so missed all of the kids, and are eager to see them again! I hope your children are looking forward to summer camp as much as we are! The first week of camp begins June 6, which is only three weeks away!

Our one-week format is the same as always, and we will again have nine sessions during the summer (although there will be a break between sessions in July - see the 'Schedules & Themes' tab). A few other changes have been made this year as well - first, we'll likely hold two of our July sessions at the McGrew Fine Arts Center on William Penn University's campus; we're looking forward to breaking in a new venue and are excited for the kids to have experience on another stage. These will be the July 18 & 25 sessions. We'll be sure to keep the website updated and you informed, so just be on the lookout for those details as we move into July.

My favorite announcement by far is that we are adding to our camp staff this summer! The irreplaceable Zach and Jana are returning to help me, and we are also welcoming Lucas Trainer on board. Lucas worked with us behind the scenes quite a bit last summer, and also helped during some of the productions, so there's a good chance that your kids already know him! He's a great addition to our team, and we're so excited to be working with him.

A smashing success!

Congratulations to all of our Stage Academy actors on two fantastic performances! During the last weekend in March, both our general session and Act II put on their shows to a total combined audience of approximately 430 people!

Stage Academy's general session, which was made up of 31 local students, performed Charlie & the Chocolate Factory on Friday, March 25, and Act II, our first-ever auditioned group, performed James & the Giant Peach on Saturday, March 26. Both shows have received rave reviews from their audiences!

A Stage Academy first!

Stage Academy is starting up not only another session but another program as well! We have been so thrilled with the interest that has been shown in Act II, our auditioned production.

Over the last four days, 24 of our best actors auditioned (braving the harsh winter storm!) for Act II, and we were incredibly impressed. We saw so much growth in these students in their preparations for their auditions, and each student accomplished so much! I want to congratulate everyone who participated - all the students should be very proud of their work!

The cast list for the production, James and the Giant Peach, is now posted under the 'Act II' tab on this site.

I cannot stress enough how excited we were by the performances of all 24 students, and how much we are looking forward to working with each of them - both in Act II and in our general session! We absolutely want this tremendous talent involved in Stage Academy!

Remember - rehearsals for both Act II and the general session begin next week! I hope to see everyone then!

Winter 2011

I am very excited about starting up again in the coming months and about the new addition to our program! 2011 is shaping up to be a big year for Daily Youth Theatre!

I also want to remind everyone that Missoula Children's Theatre will be coming to Oskaloosa January 10 - 15. Missoula is a wonderful program and I would strongly encourage all of our kids to participate!

2010 has been an absolutely unbelievable year for Daily Youth Theatre. We posted record enrollment numbers (as well as audience attendance!) for summer theatre camp, started an after-school program, and shattered our own records this last session when we had 40 students participate and perform for a crowd of 370!

I am so incredibly grateful for the support of parents and the community as we have worked to develop this program for the youth of Oskaloosa. I am a true believer in the power of theatre to change lives, and I am so happy that we have been able to continue our program year-round.

We are gearing up for a great 2011, and I can't wait to get back to work with the kids. All the details on our next session will be available by Christmas, and brochures will go out to the schools after the holiday break.

I hope everyone has a wonderful, exciting, and at least somewhat relaxing Christmas and New Year's. We'll see you in 2011!

Stage Academy

I want to send out a note of thanks to all of the participants of Stage Academy (and their wonderful parents!). Your support of Daily Youth Theatre has enabled us to begin our year-round program, and we're off to a fantastic start!

For our very first session of Stage Academy we have a total of 29 students - 13 in the middle school group & 16 in the elementary! We're thrilled with the turnout and are having a blast putting together our shows!

Our younger group is doing Monsters, Inc. and our middle schoolers are doing Clue. October 29 is shaping up to be a wonderful night of spooky and hilarious entertainment! Make sure you join us that night for the free performances!

The after-school program begins!

After a long delay, Daily Youth Theatre is thrilled to announce the start of its new after-school program, Stage Academy! Our first session begins on September 20, which is less than two weeks away! I'm so excited to be able to work with your kids throughout the school year, and I hope they're looking forward to it just as much as I am.

I'm so excited to get Stage Academy up and running, and am so grateful for the support you've shown throughout the summer - it's the reason we're able to continue year-round! Your children and this program are so special to me, and I know we've got a wonderful fall season ahead of us!

I want to thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to work with your children over the last couple of months. We had an absolutely fantastic summer and, as you saw from each of our performances, your children accomplished so much.

I have been impressed over and over by what these amazing kids are capable of doing in such a short time, and I am honored to have been able to work with them. I truly miss them already. They, and you, have made a difference in my life, and I thank you for that.

We have had a tremendously successful year at camp. The number of camp participants more than doubled last year’s, and our audiences grew exponentially as well - our last show had over 110 people in the audience!

To me though, the greatest success stories are those of your children. I have seen a remarkable amount of growth in these kids throughout the summer, and I hope you have too. As I’ve been teaching them this season, they’ve taught me so much about working hard, having fun and doing your best.

I’m beyond thrilled that, because of the success we’ve had this season, we’re able to start up an after-school program this year. Details are in the process of being finalized, and I will contact you all as soon as I know more. I’m so excited about the opportunity to continue working with your children, and I sincerely hope to see them all in September!

Week Seven - Twisted Tales

We had a record-breaking 28 kids this week at theatre camp! With such a fantastic group, we were able to do a show that our staff had been looking forward to all summer - a fairytale mixup! We combined classic stories of Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks, Rumplestiltskin, and plenty of others, and we had a blast all week long.
